How a clock finds the time in orbit
Every GPS satellite carries an atomic clock and keeps broadcasting the exact moment its signal left. The receiver in the clock measures how long each signal took to arrive, which tells it how far away each satellite is.
Three distances leave only one point where the circles meet: that is the position fix. A fourth satellite corrects the receiver's own clock, so the time on your desk ends up as precise as the time in orbit, to a fraction of a second.
Move your cursor across the page: the three nearest satellites lock onto it.
